Well-known Assamese poet and literary critic Nalinidhar Bhattacharya passed away on 2 September 2016 at the age of 95 from age-related ailments. Recipient of prestigious Sahitya Akademi award, he was regarded as one of the important poets of the Jayanti era in Assamese literature. People from all walks of life mourned his death.
Born on 4 December 1921, Bhattacharya did his early studies at Kakojan High School in Jorhat. After passing HSLC examination from JB College in 1942 , he pursued his studies further and did his graduation and post graduation. He did his Masters in Assamese. Beginning his career as a teacher of Assamese literature, he taught in St. Anthony's College in Shillong and later at the Arya Vidyapeeth College in Guwahati before retiring in 1983. During his long career he wrote numerous poetry and literary essays. Some of his best-known works include Serasalir Malita, Noni Asone Bharat, Aahot Sapon, Mohot Aitijhya etc.
Nalinidhar Bhattacharya won accolades at both national and international level. He was recipient of Soviet Land Nehru Award (1983), Sahitya Akademi award (2002), Assam Valley Literary Award (2006) to name few. Suffering from age-related ailments he breathed his last on 2nd September 2016.
